Not Again Fred...

Updated: May 30, 2023

I swear Fred is the devil incarnate! I found Hope’s tent neatly laying on top of my library the first night it arrived. I managed to put it back (staking it this time) so she would have a place to sleep, but I’m pretty sure Fred has diabolical plans for my little friend.

I assumed the wind blew it out from under the library where FEMA (Fairy Emergency Management Agency) had erected it. At least that’s what I thought, until the events of the next morning. I think Fred may have tried to steal Hope's tent the first night. Luckily, he must have gotten distracted by a dog (yeah, he’s not even scared of dogs) or something. I was blessed that a kind passerby found the small tent (dropped during his escape) and was good enough to pick it up.

All I know is, that morning I walked across the street to have coffee with my neighbor. As we were conversing, I spied Fred starting towards my house from the telephone pole. Having just filled the bird feeders, I was concerned that the obese squirrel had breakfast on his mind. I shouted from across the street “FRED!” Fred proceeded to stop, standing up on two feet, and looked for me (yes, he knows his name). I continued yelling at him from across the street not to move. He complied, standing like a prairie dog, looking everywhere for the body to go with my voice.

I shouted at him not to touch my birdseed and it was like I turned on the light bulb in Fred's little pea brain. The path he had been on had taken him very close to my library and Hope’s temporary housing. After I mentioned food, he quickly changed directions from the library towards the feeders! Once again, I screamed “Fred! Stop!” He complied temporarily, gauging if he had enough time to  get to the feeders and pig out before I could get to him. He judged me to be far enough away, since he couldn’t actually see me. When he darted across the lawn to the feeder, I told my neighbor I had to leave and deal with my squirrel problem.

I found Fred sitting on my porch railing, ready to launch himself to the freshly filled feeders. I arrived just in time to chase him away. Now that he knew they are full again, he would have them half empty by that afternoon, not doubt. It wasn’t until I chased him away I realized his original path was heading to the library earlier, not the feeders. My interference had redirected him. Fred thinks with his stomach, yet has every intention of causing havoc when he can, and now Hope has become his target!

Saying a little prayer Hope stays safe. I will keep the feeders full just in case. #fred #fairies #littlefreelibrary #michelenimtz
